The greats.

blackfeministmusic:

Nina Simone “Young, Gifted, and Black”

This song is about hope. Passing down hope to young Black people, that their parents’ and grandparents’ generations struggled, so that they would have opportunity, and were not burdened with the issues of previous generations. This was a powerful statement to put out there in 1969, and still resonates today.

“So many people are interested in the TURN UP,
Well can we TURN UP Black revenue,
Can we TURN UP Black Businesses,
Can we TURN UP Black Culture and History,
Can we TURN UP Black Spirituality,
Can we TURN UP Black Love,
Can we TURN UP Black Pride.”
